Does It Snow in Brazil? What the Winter Numbers Say

Brazil's winter runs from June to September, over a country big enough to make any national answer wrong in both directions. Some cities have nothing resembling winter; one municipality has spent an entire day below freezing. The two public bodies below both publish the same way: by station, by date.

Where the cold actually is

The federal reference is the Normal Climatológica do Brasil 1991-2020, from INMET. Its minimum-temperature table, "Temperatura Mínima Mensal e Anual (°C)", averages the daily lows per station over thirty years. In the South, July is the coldest month.

Manaus minus São Joaquim is 17.8 °C, same country, same month. And 5.9 °C is not a cold snap: it is the ordinary July morning, averaged over three decades.

The number that settles it: days at or below 10 °C

An average hides how often. INMET counts the days in a second table, Número de dias com Temperatura Mínima Mensal e Anual p/ <= 10ºC. Per year:

• São Joaquim (SC) — 178 days
• Bom Jesus (RS) — 154
• Lages (SC) — 111
• Curitiba (PR) — 65
• Porto Alegre (RS) — 48
• São Paulo, Mirante de Santana (SP) — 14
• Manaus, Belém, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Brasília — 0

Almost half the year at or below 10 °C (50 °F) in one town; not a single such morning in six of the country's largest cities. If you take one number from this page, take that pair.

A mild afternoon and a freezing dawn are the same day

The same normals give the July mean maximum: 20.1 °C in Curitiba, 19.7 °C in Porto Alegre, 21.1 °C in Florianópolis. Read both tables together and the southern winter stops resembling a northern one: the afternoon can pass for spring while the dawn sits near zero. Packing for the afternoon is the standard mistake.

Curitiba shows the gap inside one city: 9.3 °C at the July dawn against that 20.1 °C afternoon, 10.8 degrees apart in the same month, with 65 mornings a year at or below 10 °C.

Snow, with a date and a town name

The state that publishes its snow is Santa Catarina. Epagri/Ciram, the state hydrometeorology centre, posts each occurrence and numbers it within the calendar year — so a season's count and a year's count are not the same number.

2025 got three, two of them inside winter. The first came on 29 May, before the season opened: it began in Urupema in the early hours and spread to Urubici, Bom Jardim da Serra and São Joaquim. The second fell on the night of 30 June in those same four towns; the dawn that followed read -5.92 °C in Urupema and -5.78 °C in São Joaquim. The third came on the morning of 9 August, with Urupema between 0 and -2.04 °C.

The broadest episode on record is older. On 22 and 23 July 2013 more than 100 municipalities registered snow, roughly a third of the state, including low-altitude parts of the Vale do Itajaí and Greater Florianópolis where records are rare. The agency's own phrasing deserves to survive translation: "Foi um dos eventos de neve mais amplos já documentados" — one of the most extensive ever documented, which is not the claim that it was the largest.

Depth is asked for far more often than it is measured. For August 2010 the agency confirmed snow in nine municipalities and reports about 30 cm at the Morro das Torres, in Urupema — attributing that figure to the municipality's tourism department, not to its own instruments.

The severe end, and the record nobody claimed

One of the most intense cold spells in Epagri's account ran from 12 to 25 July 2000, when four polar air masses reached the state in sequence. In São Joaquim the mean daily minimum between the 12th and the 17th was -4.6 °C, and on the 13th "a temperatura no município oscilou entre -7°C (mínima) e -2°C (máxima)" — a maximum of -2 °C, an entire day below freezing.

Recent winters have not been gentle either. On 24 June 2026 the agency registered negative temperatures in 44 Santa Catarina municipalities in one dawn, the lowest -9.2 °C in Bom Jardim da Serra (about 15 °F); the next morning it counted 49, bottoming at -8.7 °C in the same town. What the agency did with that -9.2 °C is the reason to trust it: it refused to call it a record — "como essa temperatura foi registrada por uma estação com histórico recente, não é possível considerá-la um recorde oficial". The station's series is too short to carry the word. Checked on September 16, 2026, that sentence still stands in the post.

What the numbers mean for your bag

Not a recommendation about where to go — only what the tables imply if you are going south of São Paulo between June and September.

• Pack for two temperatures. A 5 to 10 °C dawn and a 20 °C afternoon are the same day in Curitiba. Layers answer that; one heavy coat does not.
• Settle the heater question first. If you plan to buy an electric heater on arrival, the socket picks the model: supply is 127 V or 220 V by city, on pins of Brazil's own.
• Treat frost as a road condition. Epagri logs widespread frost alongside those cold dawns, concentrated in the southern highlands — the stretches behind the dangerous roads guide. If your route climbs, read driving in Brazil and price the rental accordingly.
• Line up the calendar facts. The public holidays, and the fact that Brazilian clocks no longer change — so the gap to your time zone moves twice a year without anything moving here.
• Expect this shape of answer again. A booking asks for a CEP, and whether the tap water is drinkable resolves the same way: by city, not country.

What we could not verify

• How often it snows. No published series of occurrences exists for the South. Epagri's blog is a communication channel, not a register: checked on September 16, 2026, its public feed carries 222 posts, the oldest from April 2020, and a winter without a post does not prove a winter without snow. Averages quoted elsewhere do not come from the agency.
• Brazil's all-time low. The figure that circulates for Caçador in 1952 is not published by INMET as a historical series — its "Extremos" sections carry current monitoring instead. We found it only on a consular page from 2022, with no meteorological authority behind it, so it is absent here on purpose.
• Snow outside Santa Catarina, officially. Paraná's institute, Simepar, publishes winter balances, but its post pages answered 403 behind a bot filter on September 16, 2026, so nothing from them is used here. We found no Rio Grande do Sul equivalent to Epagri's log either. That is a gap in what we opened, not a claim that it does not snow there.
• Six stations' annual totals. Caxias do Sul, Chapecó, Cruz Alta, Campo Mourão, Londrina and Uruguaiana publish a dash for the yearly count of days at or below 10 °C, so they are missing from that list — Caxias do Sul appears in the July table at 8.8 °C. Their monthly figures exist; the annual one does not.
