Are Brazilian Plugs the Same as Europe's? No, and Almost Is Worse

A European plug meeting a Brazilian wall is rarely a clean rejection. The shapes rhyme just enough to raise hopes, and that near miss is the whole problem — because fitting is not the same as being safe, and neither is the same as working.

No. Brazil wrote its own socket standard, ABNT NBR 14136, made it compulsory in 2006 and closed the switchover in 2011. Inmetro's own position is that there is no international plug standard for it to share: every country runs its own.

The trap is what the Brazilian socket accepts — round pins of 4 mm or 4.8 mm, usually sunk in a recess. Close enough to raise hopes, not close enough to promise anything — and we cannot tell you whether your plug seats, because the dimensions on both sides sit in standards that are sold, not published.

What the Brazilian socket actually is

Brazilian plugs carry two or three round pins, and the socket has three holes. The pattern holds two pin diameters, and what separates them is amperage, not voltage: 4 mm up to 10 A, 4.8 mm up to 20 A. A 4.8 mm pin has nowhere to go in a 10 A socket, so even Brazilian appliances meet Brazilian walls that reject them.

Around the holes sits a hexagonal well, sunk below the faceplate, which Inmetro says is there to keep a fingertip off a live pin and stop one pin entering alone. A wide plug body can bottom out on that rim before its pins reach anything.

Then Ordinance 90 of 2022 complicates it usefully: the geometry of the holes must hold even when the recess is removed. A socket without a well is legal, and you will meet both kinds. The item before it bans disfiguring the pattern by any means, tools included, and extends that ban to power strips and extension cords.

The holes are fixed; the wall around them is not. That is why no country-level yes or no exists here: the same plug can bottom out on one socket and seat in the next room.

The earth pin is the part that does not travel

Brazil legislated grounding before it finished legislating plugs. Law 11,337 of 2006 requires buildings whose construction begins after it took effect — 25 October 2006 — to have an earthing system, wiring compatible with a protective earth conductor, and sockets with the corresponding third contact. It does not reach backward, so a 1980s apartment can legally have two-contact sockets today.

The other half lands on the appliance: since 1 January 2010, metal-cased Class I devices sold in Brazil must have a protective earth conductor and the matching plug.

This is where the comparison with Europe stops being answerable. How a European plug engages that third contact, or fails to, we cannot show from a primary source — the last section says why.

What an adapter is certified to do, and what it never does

Adapters and the three-outlet splitter Brazilians call a benjamim sit outside the 2022 plug-and-socket rules. That reads like a gap and is not one: they have their own regulation. Ordinance 9, dated 17 January 2022, put adapters under a consolidated conformity regime, struck the 2007 rule it replaced, and took effect on 1 February 2022. The adapter on a São Paulo shelf went through compulsory certification and wears the Inmetro seal.

Certification does not stretch to electricity. An adapter changes the shape of a connection and nothing about what comes down the wire — and Brazil hands you two different supply voltages depending on the city, which is the other question entirely.

Markings will not close that gap. The regulation orders three things stamped into any plug or socket sold here: the maker's mark, the voltage it is meant for, and wattage or rated current. All three describe the object in your hand, not the circuit behind it. If your devices charge over USB, a local SIM or an eSIM will matter more than the wall.

Brazil wrote its own, and the referee has left

ABNT published NBR 14136 in July 1998, drawing on the draft international standard IEC 60906-1. By Inmetro's own account, a 2000 ordinance made it mandatory from 1 January 2006, and the final deadline fell on 1 July 2011.

Asked why Brazil did not adopt the international plug standard, Inmetro answers that no such thing exists: every country developed its own. Its examples run from Argentina and Uruguay to France, Italy, Switzerland and Japan, each with a different one. "Europe" is not one socket either.

The body that settled such questions has left the field. The IEC retired its World Plugs guide; the page now reports it "is no longer available" and points readers at adapter manufacturers and travel websites instead. That guide is where the letter labels came from, Type N included.

What we could not verify

  • The distance between the pin centers — so, whether your own plug fits. Travel articles and adapter listings all state 19 mm. No primary source we reached says it. ABNT sells NBR 14136 rather than publishing it, and Ordinance 90 points at the standard five times without reproducing a dimension. Europlug (EN 50075) and the American NEMA WD-6 are sold too, and the IEC retired the guide that would have arbitrated. So we give the diameters Inmetro states and no spacing — and not an adapter maker's catalog.
  • Brazilian exclusivity over IEC 60906-1. Sources everywhere call Brazil the only country to adopt it nationally. Confirming that needs a survey of dozens of national standards, and the reference that held them is gone.
  • What Brazilian law makes an appliance print about the voltage it accepts. Bivolt, the everyday word for dual-voltage, appears zero times in Ordinance 90, which governs the connector and not the device. A gazette search for an Inmetro act on appliance voltage marking returned nothing.

The pattern has three, and buildings started after October 2006 are required to be wired for it. Older buildings may legally have none.
