Is Copacabana's New Year's Eve Free? How Rio's Réveillon Works
Copacabana's New Year's Eve is a free beach party run by Rio's city hall, not a ticketed event, and on October 9, 2026 its official pages showed nothing for the 2026-27 edition. The last two editions named headliners in October or November, released the program with times in December and the road plan on December 26.

Copacabana's New Year's Eve is a free public party on the beach, run by the city through Riotur, its tourism company. In 2025-26 the city called the shows free, ran three stages at Copacabana and Leme and set off a 12-minute fireworks show.
On October 9, 2026 the party's official pages showed nothing for December 31, 2026. The last two editions named headliners on October 16, 2024 and by November 27, 2025, and released the program with times in December and the road plan on December 26. In 2025-26 the metro let in only holders of a R$ 15 passport from 19:00.
A free party on the sand, run by the city
Rio calls it the Réveillon, the word Brazilians use for the New Year's Eve party. In 2025-26 city hall promoted it through Riotur, the production company SRCOM produced it and TV Globo was to broadcast it nationwide. The city's operating plan called the shows free (shows gratuitos) and described no entry fee; the only price it gave for getting there was the metro passport.
In 2025-26 Copacabana had three stages on the sand: the Rio stage in front of the Copacabana Palace hotel, the Samba stage at Rua República do Peru and a gospel stage at Leme, plus ten more elsewhere in Rio. The fireworks ran 12 minutes from 19 barges, up from 10 in 2024-25. Riotur reported more than 5.1 million people at its 13 stages, 2.6 million of them at Copacabana (January 1, 2026; the city's own data deck, Réveillon em Dados, gives 2.5 million as an estimate). A survey by Riotur and two city secretariats put Rio's visitors from December 27, 2024 to January 2, 2025 at 890,900, of whom 12.7% were foreign, led by Argentina, the United States and Chile.
What the city had published for 2026-27 on October 9, 2026
Nothing, on the pages that carried the last edition. Checked on October 9, 2026:
- reveillon.rio, Riotur's site for the party, still carries the header Réveillon 2025 and has no item after January 1, 2026.
- Riotur's news feed has 196 items since January 2, 2026, none with Réveillon or New Year in the title.
- COR-Rio, the city's operations center, has no post about the Réveillon after January 1.
- MetrôRio, which runs the Rio metro, redirects its passport page (metrorio.com.br/reveillon) to its home page.
- prefeitura.rio, the city's news portal: its feed has no item mentioning réveillon after May 18, 2026 (searched October 10).
- The Official Gazette (Diário Oficial), searched for 2026, has no 2026-27 contract or notice. Its only forward-looking mention is a budget goal, Projeto Réveillon realizado (Réveillon project carried out), of 14 units a year from 2026 to 2029 (January 15, 2026), repeated in the 2027 goals (July 22, 2026): a budget line, not a program.
How the last two editions unfolded, by the dates on the official pages:
| Step | 2024-25 | 2025-26 |
|---|---|---|
| First headliners named | Oct 16, 2024 | by Nov 27, 2025 |
| Program with times, stage by stage | Dec 17, 2024 | Dec 4, 2025 |
| Metro tickets on sale | Dec 9, 2024 | Dec 15, 2025 |
| Operating plan presented | Dec 26, 2024 | Dec 26, 2025 |
A November 22, 2024 page had already listed the Copacabana acts by stage, without times. Times moved even after release: the Rio stage's 22:15 act of December 4 was listed at 22:30 by December 19.
Getting there and back: the last plan the city published
This is the plan the city presented on December 26, 2025, with MetrôRio's notices of that month and the traffic ordinance of December 29: the latest one, not a 2026-27 plan, and different from the year before.
Roads. CET-Rio, the city's traffic company, began banning parking on several streets at 06:00 on December 30 (Avenida Atlântica itself from 23:00) and closed the avenue to traffic at 07:00 on December 31, Leme included. From 19:00 the city blocked 23 listed accesses to Copacabana until 05:00. Its traffic ordinance (Portaria TR/SUBG/CRV 6.487, Official Gazette of December 30, 2025) exempted only emergency vehicles on duty, holders of a TRÂNSITO LIVRE (free passage) pass issued by Riotur and, until 21:00, motorcycles, regular-line buses and licensed taxis; ride-app cars are not on the list (how ride apps are regulated). The city's release has the accesses closed to all vehicles (todos os tipos de veículos) from 21:00 to 05:00 (22:00 in 2024-25). The operations center said the blocks and the reopening ran on schedule, with intense traffic at points in Botafogo.
Metro. From 19:00 on December 31 to 05:00 on January 1, only holders of the special passport could board. MetrôRio sold it from December 15, 2025 as a R$ 15 round trip (the 2024-25 edition also sold one-way tickets, at R$ 7.50), by credit card or Pix in its app or site, or for cash, credit or debit at three stations until December 21. A QR code fixed one of five one-hour boarding windows for the trip there, from 19:00 to midnight, and the turnstile handed over a return wristband (pulseira de retorno), required to board after midnight, when only five stations were open for boarding; MetrôRio recommended Siqueira Campos. Fare cards and contactless payment stopped working at 19:00; large items above 25 liters, bottles, fireworks and bicycles were banned. By December 30 MetrôRio had sold more than 98,000 passports, with the 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 windows more than 94% sold.
Buses. From 18:00 to 21:00, 24 city lines and 11 intercity lines were to run into Copacabana, ending at Avenida Princesa Isabel. From 21:00 to 05:00 boarding was to be only at the Enseada de Botafogo terminal.
The operations center's free app has an English version. Rio runs on UTC-3 all year, so midnight there is 10 p.m. in New York (time zones). The city's prepaid taxi table from Galeão to Copacabana is in the Galeão guide.
What is private: hotels, clubs and beach kiosks
Besides the party on the sand, hotel dinners, club nights and beach-kiosk parties are separate paid events. Riotur listed them on November 25 and 27 and December 15, 2025, each with the organizer's site, phone or Instagram account. In those lists, per-person adult prices ran from R$ 150 (a kiosk's entry) to R$ 4,800 (a hotel dinner plus rooftop party for non-guests), some plus a 10% to 15% charge (what that charge is), and several hotels said their events were open to non-guests (hóspedes e não hóspedes). No 2026-27 list existed on October 9, 2026; the 2025-26 ones first appeared about five weeks before the night. The Sambadrome parades of Carnival, by contrast, are ticketed: how that sale works.
White clothes, seven waves and Iemanjá
Riotur's own pages disagree on when the beach tradition began. Its history page of November 1, 2023 dates the gatherings of the priest Tata Tancredo da Silva Pinto on Copacabana to 1960, while a January 31, 2025 piece says he began the festivities for Iemanjá, the Queen of the Sea in Afro-Brazilian religions, in the early 1950s, on December 31, her day in Umbanda. A study in Religare by State University of Rio de Janeiro researchers (July 2021 issue) goes back further: 1940s newspapers already mentioned people on Copacabana beach between the last days of the year and January 1, and the authors say no single group can be credited with the beach offerings, a popular December 31 devotion since the late 1800s.
Agência Brasil, the public news agency (December 29, 2023), says white comes from the liturgical clothes worn for the offerings: Umbanda followers tie it to Iemanjá, Candomblé followers to Oxalá. It traces the jump over seven waves to African traditions. Riotur (December 2025) reads white as peace and spiritual renewal.
Crowds, safety and money
The 2025-26 plan listed 78 Military Police towers (Polícia Militar, the state's uniformed police) watching the crowd, search points at pedestrian access, a ban on glass bottles sold by vendors, and four medical posts on Avenida Atlântica, open from 17:30 to 05:00. The Municipal Guard (Guarda Municipal, the city's uniformed guard) and social services were to hand out wristbands for children. The health secretariat advised carrying ID and an emergency phone number, drinking water and checking the source of drinks and food. What we could not verify
- Ride-app drop-off and pick-up points. The ordinance and the plan say nothing about them, Uber's Brazil newsroom has no item on the night (titles from September 2025 to September 2026), and 99's site returns a security checkpoint to scripts, which we did not bypass.
- Foreign cards on the metro app. MetrôRio names credit card and Pix and says nothing on foreign cards or a CPF, the Brazilian tax number.
- The state police plan. The state government's news API returned no items for any query on October 9-10, the Military Police site did not connect, and the Fire Department's news site has no Réveillon-operation item newer than its 2022-23 one.
- Start time, watching from abroad, rooms. No page gives the fireworks' start time or how to watch outside Brazil, and none of the three Réveillon em Dados decks (2023-24 to 2025-26) carries a hotel occupancy rate or room-price statistic.
Frequently asked
Yes, in 2025-26: the city's plan called the shows free and described no entry fee. The metro passport (R$ 15 that year) is a transport fee, and hotel and kiosk parties are separate paid events. Checked on October 9, 2026.
Not on October 9, 2026: Riotur's site and news feed, the city's operations center and the metro's passport page had nothing. Headliners came on October 16, 2024 and by November 27, 2025.
No page gives a start time. Riotur's December 4, 2025 program listed a 23:45 turn-of-the-year moment on the three Copacabana and Leme stages; its December 19 version and the city's December 26 plan drop it. All three put the next act at 00:12 and call the fireworks 12 minutes long.
A licensed taxi could, until 21:00; a ride-app car was not on the exemption list. In 2025-26 the city's traffic ordinance blocked 23 accesses to Copacabana from 19:00 to 05:00, exempting only emergency vehicles, Riotur pass holders and, until 21:00, motorcycles, buses and taxis.
Agência Brasil says white comes from the liturgical clothes worn for Umbanda and Candomblé offerings, which Umbanda followers tie to Iemanjá and Candomblé followers to Oxalá. Riotur reads it as peace and spiritual renewal.
