What Is BSB Airport? Brasília's Connecting Hub and Its Share Auction

Brasília sits in the Federal District (DF), which the Constitution bars from splitting into municipalities and gives a state's and a city's legislative powers: its government sets the rules for the city buses, taxis and ride apps at the curb.

What BSB is, and where it sits

Law 9,794 of 1999 named the airport for President Juscelino Kubitschek. IATA's code search returns one line for Brasilia, BSB, "J. Kubitschek Intl", and no metropolitan-area code like São Paulo's SAO or Rio's RIO; the GRU guide explains the mechanism. Checked on September 28, 2026.

DECEA, the air force's airspace department, tags SBBR as international. The district's bus-line system files the terminal under Lago Sul, administrative region XVI: in the DF, such regions stand where you would expect neighborhoods, as Brasília addresses show.

Who runs BSB, and why its shares are for sale

ANAC dates the concession's start to July 24, 2012, for 25 years; the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) puts the end in 2037. The operator names Corporación América Airports as its controller, and Infraero, the federal airport company, holds 49%.

The winning 2012 bid, a TCU settlement committee's report records, was a fixed fee of R$ 4.5 billion, 637% above the minimum, and results ran counter to the studies behind that price; traffic peaked at 19.8 million in 2015, by the operator's count. Counting the fee's yearly installments, cash flow turns negative, and the company warned this could end the contract early through a relicitação, the federal procedure for handing a concession back to be auctioned again.

The TCU approved the committee's solution, with conditions, on April 1, 2026. A transitional amendment in force since June 29 suspends the fixed and variable fees and sets up the sale of 100% of the shares, Infraero's included. ANAC's notice sets the auction for December 17, 2026, and no act in the Official Gazette had moved it by September 28. The highest yearly share of gross revenue offered to the government wins, the current controller may bid, and the report's main new obligation is an international pier. The auction is not the handover: the tender's schedule runs appeals into February 2027, and the share transfer and renegotiated contract follow competition clearance, with no date set.

What flies from BSB

On September 28, 2026, the operator's directory listed five airlines: Azul, GOL and LATAM as domestic, Copa and TAP as international. In our sum of ANAC's 2025 movement data, LATAM's Brazilian arm carried 51% of passengers, GOL 38% and Azul 9%. In ANAC's flight register for July 2026, the latest on September 28, 2026, the three flew from BSB to 38 Brazilian airports, including airports that serve all 26 other state capitals, by our count.

Abroad, the operator's note of September 1, 2026 charts eight direct destinations: Panama City with Copa; Lima and Santiago with LATAM; Miami, Orlando, Buenos Aires's Aeroparque and Bogotá with GOL; and Lisbon with TAP. July's register also shows GOL flying to Cancún. International passengers were 5% of the 2025 total, and bag allowances are each airline's call.

Four in ten passengers change planes here

In the same 2025 data, 6.6 million of BSB's 16.7 million boardings and disembarkations were connecting passengers: 39%, against about 42% at Guarulhos and 51% at Viracopos. The operator claims more than 40%.

It all happens in one terminal. ANAC's data put every 2025 passenger with a terminal code in Terminal 1, and the operator says Terminal 2 closed in April 2017. International flights use gates 27 to 33, in the Satellite, which the operator switches between domestic and international use; GOL places the international entrance opposite gate 24.

Flying on domestically after an international arrival, you collect your bag, clear customs and check it in again, under a national customs rule traced in the connection guide. GOL's connection counter sits to the left just after the arrivals exit. LATAM publishes its own minimum connection times at BSB: 30 minutes domestic to domestic, 45 domestic to international, 60 international to international and 90 international to domestic. Entry paperwork is national too: arrival card, customs, visa and layover.

Getting into Brasília

What the airport and the district publish, read on September 28 and 29, 2026:

The airport lists 23 district bus lines, at R$ 2.70 to R$ 5.50, most of them to other administrative regions. The table's times are from DF no Ponto, the district's transit app, at the airport stop; the line system itself times each loop from its start, and weekends have their own timetables. Buses and metro are free on Sundays, eleven listed holidays and Carnival, under the DF's Vai de Graça ("ride free") program. In 2025 the district's news agency said riders without a transit card could use a credit or debit card at no charge, and those with no card could ask the conductor to release the turnstile. On other days BRB, the bank running the fare system, says validators take contactless Visa, Mastercard and Elo cards or phones at one full fare per ride; foreign cards are another question.

The airport's page lists an executive bus to the hotel sectors that is not running, with no date to return, and no train or metro.

The DF regulates ride apps under a 2016 district law, and Semob, its transport department, tells riders to refuse any trip offered in person; the Uber guide has the rest.

Taxis: one meter for the whole district

District law gives the whole DF one taxi fare, set by decree. The decree in force on September 28, 2026, dated December 6, 2024, charges R$ 6.59 to start plus R$ 3.59 per km on bandeira 1, the base rate, or R$ 4.61 on bandeira 2: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays, all day on weekends and holidays, and with more than three passengers, children under 7 not counted. Each bag beyond one suitcase and two carry-ons adds 10% to the fare, up to 50%. Every taxi must take credit and debit cards at no extra charge.

The 2014 taxi law put every airport trip on bandeira 2. At the district prosecutors' request, the DF's court of justice struck that clause down in August 2015, along with a December surcharge.

Book a taxi through an authorized app and it may pick you up at the Praça Pick-Up, still on the meter, under a Semob ordinance in force since May 13, 2026; otherwise taxis load at the rank.

What we could not verify

• Minimum connection times beyond LATAM's. ANAC's capacity declarations send BSB to the operator's slot page, which publishes none; neither does the operator's FAQ or GOL's connection page.
• What each zone of the prepaid executive taxi costs. A 2016 Semob ordinance sets executive fares, prepaid included, at twice the bandeira 1 rate with no surcharges; the airport publishes no zone table.
• A current official text of the free-ride rules. Only archived 2025 agency stories and a July 2026 newspaper report citing the government state them; the decree leaves riders without BRB cards to a Semob act absent from its program page and list of ordinances on September 29, and BRB's bank-card page mentions neither the program nor cards issued abroad.
